SPEECH DELIVERED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE NIGERIAN COUNCIL OF REGISTERED INSURANCE BROKERS, MR AYODAPO SHODERU, FIIN, FCIB DURING A COURTESY VISIT TO THE PRESIDENT OF CIIN, MR BOLA TEMOWO ON WEDNESDAY JULY 16, 2014

The Governing Council Members of CIIN (here Present)
Members of my delegation
Ladies and Gentlemen

I am most delighted to pay the new President of the CIIN, Mr. Bola Temowo this felicity visit. I like to once again tender my apology for not being able to personally attend the investiture ceremony of the new President as I was billed to travel out of the country same time. However, I advised my Deputy President and some other Board Members to stand in my stead at the occasion.

Suffice it to say that the ascension of Mr. Bola Temowo at this time will enhance the steady progress and professionalism of the Insurance Industry laid down by his Predecessors without mincing words, Bola is one of the respected upwardly mobile Insurance Professionals that we could be proud of all the time. I wish him a brilliant success in office.

Aside from enhancing intra-industry collaboration, our visit is also intended to bring to the front burner the challenges and issues that our two (2) bodies could work on and ultimately profit from.

CIIN AND NAICOM

Being a member of the Board of the National Insurance Commission, it is quite apposite for me to appeal to the CIIN to prevail on the Commission to further assist the growth of Insurance Broking particularly in softening its declaration on request for Brokers to make declaration of their accounts on monthly basis.

On lapsing of licenses of Brokers by the Commission, I also would appeal that the Commission could extend its act of compassion to minimize the exercise. As we are all aware, the Insurance Industry as remained fragile and we need a lot of concessions for the operators to grow the profession in the country.

Furthermore, as the professional arm of the Industry, the Institute owe it a duty to continually motivate intra industry collaboration especially between Insurance Brokers and Underwriters. It is a thing of regret that attempts to broker a meeting between the NCRIB and NIA did not materialise for quite a while. However, I have slated a meeting between our Council, the new Chairman of NIA Mr. G. U. S. Wiggle, with the belief that the meeting will kick-start a revived relationship between the two (2) bodies.

INDUSTRYS’ APPRECIATION EVENING FOR GOVERNOR FASHOLA

It is a statement of fact that the Lagos State Governor under His Excellency Governor Raji Fashola(SAN) as undisputedly stood out as the most insurance -friendly Governor in the State. For this reason, it is being conceived that an Appreciation Evening be organised by the industry for the Governor. This initiative will position the Industry more positively in the eyes of the Government and be a source of inspiration for other states to engage the services of insurance brokers. If you don’t mind, we could discuss further on modality for the event in the course of this meeting.

OBA OMOSANYA AKINYEMI PALACE FUND RAISING

In the spirit of camaraderie, I like to table the wishes of one of the leading icons of the insurance industry, Oba Omosanya Akinyemi for the support of insurance operators towards the building of a befitting palace in his Idena Remo Community. Remember, Oba Akinyemi was a former Managing Director/CEO of Law Union and Rock Insurance Plc as well as Chairman of the NIA. We may also wish to discuss more extensively on the issue after my speech.

In conclusion, I like to thank the CIIN President for this visit as I wish him and the Institute more positive strides.

Thank you.

AYODAPO A. SHODERU, FIIN, FCIB
