Insurance going the way of the 401 (k)

By year's end, 17,500 employees from at least 21 Capital Region companies will be buying health insurance in a new way.

Rose & Kiernan in East Greenbush is running a private marketplace in which four insurers (more are on the way) are vying for more policies.

It's the same premise as the government-run exchanges, created by the federal Affordable Care Act, which have been in national headlines for months.

But Rose & Kiernan's version offers a crucial twist for bigger employers.

It enables them to put down a "defined contribution" toward insurance - sparking the same widescale shift that happened.
