Bike insurance products diversifying in Japan

Jiji Press Bicycle insurance products have diversified in Japan amid an increase in the use of bikes, which have lead to higher rates of exposure to accident risks.

Insurance firms have stepped up sales of policies with large benefits, such as ¥100 million, in particular, so policyholders can respond to demand for heavy damages payments in the case of accidents. Even negotiation services for out-of-court settlements have emerged.

There are about 70 million bikes in Japan, according to the Japan Bicycle Promotion Institute. The number is almost equal to that of automobiles, but there is no obligation for riders to take out insurance, experts note.

Only about 30 percent of bike owners are covered by insurance, including special coverage attached to accident insurance, a nonlife insurance firm official said.

The number of inquiries about bicycle insurance made to nonlife insurance companies spiked following a court ruling in July that ordered the mother of a boy who caused a serious accident to pay ¥95.2 million in compensation.
