NIA mourns Past Chairman, Remi Olowude

As Wiggle leads condolence team to IGI

The Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has expressed shock and deep sadness over the demise of its immediate past Chairman and Executive Vice Chairman of Industrial and General Insurance Plc (IGI), Mr. Remi Olowude who passed on last week.  He was aged 63 years

In a letter by the Chairman of the Association, Mr. Godwin Wiggle to the Deputy Managing Director and Management of IGI, the Association expressed its deepest condolences to the IGI group and wished the soul of the immediate past Chairman external repose.

Wiggle also led a delegation of the Governing Council on a condolence visit to IGI to commiserate with the management and staff on the unfortunate development.

The NIA Chairman described the late predecessor as an “epitome of humility andexcellenceand a dedicated and amiable person whose leadership qualities and sense of service endeared him to may who came in contact with him”

He said it was unfortunate that the health challenge did not allow the late past Chairman to actualize the lofty ideals which he reeled out during his investiture ceremony, adding that members of the Governing Council were looking forward with great hope and expectation that he would overcome his failing health and join them to build the industry.

Wiggle noted that Olowude had very strong passion for the insurance industry and urged the management of IGI to be prepared to hold forth and uphold the legacy of the company.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Deputy Chairman of the Association, Mr. Eddie Efekoha described the late past Chairman as “too sharp and intelligent for our generation”

He said that the insurance industry had lost a “leader and mentor”  

In his contribution, a past Chairman of the Association, Mr. Wole Oshin described the late Remi Olowude as “a great icon, Insurance entrepreneur and a guru”.

Oshin said the fact that the late insurance guru built a Pan-African Company by planting his company in six countries showed that he was a man of great vision.

He commiserated with the IGI family and prayed God to grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.

Another Governing Council member, Mrs. Yetunde Ilori described the late IGI boss as a rallying point for many people, adding that he has left a legacy and an indelible mark in the insurance industry in Africa, while the Managing Director of Cornerstone Insurance Plc, Mr. Ganiu Musa described him as a mark of quality who used every opportunity and resources to fight for the recognition of the insurance industry.

In his tribute, the Managing Director of Royal Exchange Insurance Company Ltd, Mr. Richard Borokini said the legacies left behind by the late IGI helmsman would be difficult to erase while Mr. Teju Ogunjimi of ARM Life described his death as shocking.

The Managing Director of Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc, Mr. Wale Onaolapo said the late insurance chieftain took insurance to the world

Also speaking at the occasion the Director General of the Association, Mr. Olorundare Thomas regretted that the Association was denied of Olowude’s quality presence by ill-health.  He regretted that the health challenge and eventual death did not allow him the opportunity to actualize his hopes, aspirations and dreams for the Association.

He prayed that the IGI team will have the grace to carry on with the good works of the late past Chairman.

In his response, Mr. Rotimi Fashola thanked the NIA team for the visit and promised that the Management of the company would strive to keep Olowude’s legacies going.
