Some Nigerian Insurance companies are sending their executives and marketers to Ghana to understudy the nation’s microinsurance model, Inspen has learnt.

A member of staff of one of the firms told Inspen that his organisation, as part of the plans to seek for microinsurance product licence from the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), has gone to Ghana to understudy the activities and practice of some microinsurance operators.

He noted that the trip was an eyes opener, as the microinsurance practice in Ghana has evolved and doing well, adding that firm when granted the licence will entrench first class microinsurance operations.

The takeoff of microinsurance operations has been slow as NAICOM has so far received 15 applications for microinsurance products by existing insurance companies, of which only five had been approved.

Commissioner for Insurance Fola Daniel, said the firms that have applied want authorisation for window operation which the commission is considering.

“For those who have indicated interest for window operation, we are saying to them that they cannot do micro-insurance business sitting in the comfort of their offices in Lagos or Abuja. We want them to take it to the rural areas; to the grassroots. Therefore we have asked them to give us a roadmap to taking micro insurance to the grassroots. We have to be convinced that our authorisation will take insurance to the unreached,” he said.
