Pensioners protest unpaid N13billion arrears in Ondo

Premium Times

Members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Ondo State on Tuesday marched on the streets of Akure to demand the immediate payment of their outstanding gratuities and pension arrears totalling N13billion.

They also asked Governor Olusegun Mimiko to pay the arears from the expected bailout from the Federal Government.

The placard-carrying retirees called for the sack of the Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, for comments considered by the pensioners as insulting and inciting.

Some of the placards read: ‎”Ondo State Government owes us N13 Billion”, “Pay Arrears of 15% pension increase”, “Our gratuities yet to be paid since 2011 December to both state and Local Government Pensioners”.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the pensioners,  Raphael Adetuwo, and Secretary, Adejare Adesina, the pensioners said state government owed the retired civil servants backlog of arrears. ‎

It listed its grievances as “Gratuities yet to be paid since 2011 December to both state and Local Government Pensioners. 33 percent Pension increase approved by the Federal Government yet to be implemented.

“Non-payment of Pensioners for June and July 2015. Refund and stoppage of illegal deductions from monthly pensioners allowances from December,2013.

“Non-payment of 27.5 percent pension increase yet to be paid to those retired on 31st July, 2011 and Arrears of Pension paid to Local Government yet to be paid since 2011 December.”

Mr. Akinmade acknowledged that the pensioners were being owed outstanding arrears and assured them the government would pay.

“Government assured the pensioners to expect payment of their arrears after salaries of workers in the state would have been paid later in the week,” he said.

Mr. Akinmade hinged the inability to pay the backlog on the dwindling revenue from the federation account as well as low internally generated revenue.
