South Africa consults on ‘protectionist’ regulation

The South African regulator is thought to be consulting on a controversial piece of legislation that could have a significant impact on reinsurers writing its domestic business from offshore.
It is understood that the Financial Services Board (FSB), which is responsible for regulating the (re)insurance sector in the country, is in the process of considering responses from reinsurers and brokers.
Sources told The Insurance Insider that the proposed legislation would penalise foreign reinsurers writing business from outside the country.
