The Federal Road Safety Corps has restated its determination to continue to support the Nigerian Insurance Industry Database (NIID) project in order to promote the culture of safety on our roads.

A statement by Head Corporate Communications Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) Davis Iyasere, said the Corps Marshall and Chief Executive Officer of the FRSC Boboye Oyeyemi made the pledge during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of the Nigerian Insurers Association, Mr. Sunday Thomas to his office recently.

The FRSC boss said that with the effective collaboration between the Association and FRSC, the nation can now boast of a database of motor vehicles in the country and urged insurers not to delay in uploading policydetails of insured vehicles.

“I can confidently say that the partnership between the insurance industry and the FRSC is working well.  Nigeria  can now boast of a database of motor vehicles insured in Nigeria and this can assist the government in making forecasts and planning for national development”  he enthused.

“The ultimate goal of the partnership is to make our roads safer and have an enduring ‘road safe system’ because the nation expects the FRSC and the insurance industry represented by the NIA to have a road safe system” he noted.

Oyeyemi further challenged the Association to move its portal to the next level by looking beyond verification and keying into the “Flying ticket” project being initiated by the Commission.

According to him, “NIA has a robust database already but that is not the ultimate.  The ultimate is to make it vibrant, effective and robust.  This means that NIA needs to interface with the FRSC so that we can all move to the next level.  “I am sure the “flight ticket” project will launch the insurance sector into the next level” he added.

The “Flying ticket” project is a system of booking offenders who evade arrest using their vehicle registration numbers so that such offenders could be flagged in the portal and brought to book at the point of renewing their vehicle particulars.

He urged the Association to step up its enlightenment project as well as its stakeholder engagement initiatives to get more Nigerians into the insurance net and eradicate touting.

“You must engage in advocacy in high density states.  Lagos State controlsabout 30% of vehicles in Nigeria.  You must try and reach them aggressively to eradicate touting and increase patronage of genuine insurance policies” he advised.

In his remarks the Director-General of the Nigerian Insurers Association, Mr. Olorundare Sunday Thomas, commended the FRSC for the giant strides the organization has made in ensuring safety of lives on our roads.

Mr. Thomas said he was amazed by what he saw at the FRSC Data Room which showed live footages of accident scenes, on-line, real time reports of road traffic situations across the country and other innovative features. “The level of transformation and technology is amazing” he stated.

“With what I have seen in the FRSC Data Room, there is hope for our country” Mr. Thomas noted with enthusiasm.

He urged the FRSC not to relent in lending support to NIA database project adding that the Association has benefited immensely from the partnership and hopes to sustain it.

The NIA Director-General said insurance industry was ready to collaborate with the Corp on the NOVO Health Africa initiative as it will give a good image of the insurance industry and benefit the masses.

The Novo Health Africa Initiative is a private sector initiative aimed at assisting accident victims access insurance compensation in time of accident.
