Remi Olowude former NIA's chairman is dead

The Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Indutrial and General Insurance Remi Olowude passed away in the early hours of today Sunday September 28, in a hospital in the United States.

Olowude had been ill for a while, he died at 62.


IGI's Corporate Affairs Manager, Steve Ilo , who confirmed his death, told Inspen that further details will be contained in a statement to be issued by his family and the management of IGI Group.

He said: "All I can confirm to you at the moment is that our Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Mr bRemi Olowude, OON, has passed on. Further details will be contained in a statement to be issued by his family and management of IGI Group, which he founded."



The Managing Director Riskguard-Africa Nigeria Limited and Technical Adviser Insurance Consumers Association of Nigeria (INSCAN) Yemi Soladoye, said Olowude’s death was a sad end, noting that he contributed greatly to industry development and that his impacts which were indelible would not be easily forgotten.

He prayed God to grants his family and members of IGI group the fortitude to bear the loss.  



Olowude had a very rich inter-disciplinary background. He had his formal education in Economics both at the University of Lagos (1970-73) and the University of Santa Clara, California, United States (1976). He was also an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute of London. 

A self-motivated achiever,  Olowude deployed his multi-disciplinary background, profession nalism and vision to build a conglomerate with interests in various sectors of the Nigerian Economy. 

Olowude has delivered papers at various fora on wide-ranging topics. He has a total of 28 years’ cognate experience in Insurance Management

Olowude, was an Economist, Chartered Insurer, and an International investor in several companies around Africa. 




He was the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of Industrial  and General Insurance Plc and the Chairman of National Insurance Corporation Limited, a publicly quoted company in Uganda. He was a Director and co-Chairman on the Board of SONARWA Holdings which owns separate Life, and General insurance companies in Rwanda.


Olowude held a Master Degree in Economics, and completed the coursework for the award of a Doctorate Degree from the University of Santa Clara, California, USA.

He had deployed his international business expertise, professionalism and vision to build a conglomerate with interests in various business sectors spanning financial services, telecommunications, oil and gas, mortgage banking and aviation.

He held the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger of The Federal Republic of Nigeria, for his exemplary service to his country. He was the former Chairman of the Nigerian Insurers Association, an umbrella body for all insurance companies in Nigeria.
