'We moved to France and now can't get health insurance cover'

Insurer SimplyHealth was no longer able to offer cover to the reader and his wife after they moved to France

Such cash plans are used to pay for visits to the dentist and optician for instance. So their focus is on preventive health rather than for when, say, a serious illness strikes and costly treatment is required.

A premium is paid with a certain limit that may be reimbursed under certain categories per year.

Simplyhealth says: "Simplyhealth is a UK-based insurer and, apart from some parts of the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, the only area outside the UK where Simplyhealth still actively sells policies is Gibraltar, where it will continue to do so.

"We do, however, have a small number of customers that live outside of these areas where historically we accommodated their requirements for cover. Simplyhealth has taken the decision to discontinue providing cover in these places as it is not commercially viable to obtain appropriate regulatory passports/licences or taxation registrations.

"We have written to those customers affected by this change and given them a year’s notice instead of the usual three months to give them the opportunity to make alternative arrangements."

This may of course not be as easy as it sounds. You say the firm’s decision has left both your husband and yourself high and dry.
