PROTOCOLS
It is another edition of the Annual Professionals’ Forum and a delight to have been part of the forum since its inception in 1991.
Fellow Professionals, we have remained collectively committed to the goals and objectives for establishing the forum, especially its significance as the single most effective platform for deliberating on and contributing to the issues pertinent to the sustenance of the ideals of our professional calling, our Industry and its proper positioning in the financial services sector of the National Economy.
Let me therefore seize this opportunity in welcoming you to the 23rd edition of the forum. Remarkably we are returning to Abeokuta after many years and it is my belief that for many professionals the gateway city brings back fond memories especially for those who were inducted into the fold during the days the Professionals’ Forum hosted the Graduation Ceremony.
Our distinguished gathering this year focuses on the repositioning of the Insurance Industry in the face of emerging trends in the business landscape. The forum theme: "The Insurance Industry –New Trends and Strategies", underscores the devotion of two days of robust deliberations on well-conceived topics covering a wide spectrum of issues relating to the industry dynamics, these include:
The Forum Theme: "New Trends and Strategies"
Investment and Investors’ Interest
Human Capital Development
Client Services
Financial Reporting
Market Expansion and Penetration
The topics will be addressed by experienced Guest Speakers who will bring their informed perspectives and opinions to bear.
Let me on behalf of the Governing Council thank the respected Speakers for accepting to contribute to the actualization of this year’s Forum and for their invaluable time.
The Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Fola Daniel has contributed exceptionally to the Professionals’ Forum in the last few years. His meeting with CEO’s has brought a useful angle to the forum, underscoring the fact that CEO’s should make it a point of duty to attend the annual professionals’ forum and be part and parcel of its deliberations. We are also grateful to the Commissioner for accepting to deliver the keynote address which has also become the much awaited and cherished authoritative statement on the state of the Insurance Industry.
Professional Colleagues, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, your active participation in all the session of this Forum remains the only way to guarantee that the efforts of the organizing committee in putting together a well packaged platform for knowledge sharing, are not in vane. In convening this year’s Forum, the organizing committee chaired by Mr. Adeyemo Adejumo, our respected past President ensured that they got in touch with Insurance Professionals’ outside mainstream Insurance practice. It is therefore my expectation that we should have in our midst, colleagues from the Oil and Gas Industry, Telecommunications, Manufacturing, the Academia and the Banking Sector. All of these voices and opinions joined with our Industry perspective will produce results which far exceed the ordinary.
I have reserved this final part of my speech to acknowledge your individual and collective contributions to the success of my Investiture as the 46th President of our great Institute on the 19th of June, 2014 at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. It is close to 100 days since the Investiture and naturally, the euphoria has waned whilst all hands are on the deck pushing the agendas we set for ourselves. Our commitment to the doctrine of a Legacy of Continuity, has also guaranteed that we are not unburdened by fresh agendas other than ensuring that all existing projects are given fresh breath and pursued with greater vigor. This is without prejudice to the few additional projects which we find necessary at this stage of our development. I am pleased to report that we are making significant progress with:
The commencement of academic activities at the College of Insurance and Financial Management (CIFM).
The Institute’s Victoria Island Building Project.
Establishment of E-Library.
Strengthening the study and teaching of Insurance in Secondary Schools and tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.
Train the Trainer Programme
Provision of adequately trained manpower at the Institute Secretariat for improved service delivery.
It is cheering to report that we have recently made donation of 2,000 copies of the Insurance Textbook for Secondary Schools, to the Lagos State Government to aid the teaching of Insurance in the State Secondary Schools. Only yesterday, i.e. Wednesday 10th September, 2014 we made a similar donation to the Ogun State Government. In both instances our commitment remains keeping in close contact with the State Ministries of Education with a view to concluding the modalities for training their teachers for the task of teaching Insurance with minimal constraint.
Permit me to state that plans are on course for the presentation of the book in the National level. Let me state that we will continue to explore all the avenues for actualizing all projects without losing their original essence.
As I take my seat, I wish to welcome you once again to the 2014 Professionals’ Forum and wish you a rewarding experience.
Thank you for your attention
BOLA TEMOWO, FCII, FIIN
President/Chairman of Council
CHARTERED INSURANCE INSTITUTE OF NIGERIA
