ADDRESS BY MR. BOLA TEMOWO, PRESIDENT/CHAIRMAN OF COUNCIL, CHARTERED INSURANCE INSTITUTE OF NIGERIA, DURING THE COMMISSIONING OF THE CENTRE FOR INSURANCE AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT STUDIES (CIFMS) ON THURSDAY 30TH JULY, 2015

I am delighted by the opportunity to address this august gathering on the occasion of the Commissioning of the Centre for Insurance and Financial Management Studies.

Today’s Commissioning follows four years of giant strides in actualizing our dream of a College, conceived to change the face of Insurance and Financial Management education in Nigeria.

On behalf of the Governing Council of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria and the Board of the College of Insurance, I wish to appreciate and commend the Insurance Industry Stakeholders for sharing our vision and mission for the College as the most desirable step towards boosting insurance education. The massive financial support from individual and Corporate donors towards the completion of the existing structures and facilities are testimonies of uninhibited belief in the potentials of the College to provide world-class human capital development programmes for the Insurance and Financial Services sector.

Let me therefore assure that the names of all contributors to the actualization of this epoch-making project will be etched in gold as an indelible mark of achievement. I am aware of a separate segment of today’s ceremony during which the Board of the College will acknowledge and honour all the existing contributors for supporting a worthy cause.

It is pertinent to state that although the College is being Commissioned today, work on the remaining phases of the project will continue. For this reason, I wish to appeal for more contributions from individual and corporates who would find the College of Insurance project a worthy channel to express their belief in the development of a world-class College of Insurance in our own country.

Let me also state that the College relies on patronage of its programmes by our industry. This is to ensure that it makes use of its income generation capability for the financing of parts of the remaining phases of the project.

Permit me to state that prior to today’s Commissioning, so much had been put in place to justify the development of a full-fledged College. These efforts have been worthwhile and actually fast-tracked the Commissioning you are witnessing. They include:
➢ Employment of a Rector who is evidently qualified to deliver the goals.
➢ Employment of other key staff and movement of all College existing staff to the College campus.
➢ Equipment of the completed buildings to make them functional
➢ Board approval of the commencement of short and long-term courses
➢ Installation of two electricity generating plants at the College (It involved the movement of an existing 200KVA generator from the Institute Secretariat to the College for maximal utilization and the donation of a second 200KVA plant by Unitrust Insurance Co. Ltd
➢ Hiring of a private security outfit to man the College premises day and night.
➢ Scheduling of all College Board meetings at the College for the ease of assessing the progress being made, and
➢ Registration of the College as a subsidiary of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria. For a full legal status to operate.

As I end this address, I wish to specially welcome the Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Fola Daniel. The National Insurance Commission under his leadership gave its blessings to the College project while pledging greater support towards its growth and development.

I wish to join the rest of the Insurance Industry in acknowledging the immeasurable roles played by the National Insurance Commission under his leadership and for maintaining the tempo of their support even as Mr. Daniel’s two terms in office draw to an end. We will continue to celebrate him for taking insurance regulation in Nigeria to an enviable height.

It is therefore my honour and privilege to invite the Commissioner for Insurance to perform the Commissioning of the Centre for Insurance and Financial Management Studies.

Thank you for your attention and God bless.

BOLA TEMOWO, FCII, FIIN
President/Chairman of Council
Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria
