State launches insurance cover for Police Officers

By Brian Otieno
Police officers will have insurance cover from next year, the government has said. Deputy President William Ruto on Thursday said the move will help families of officers killed or incapacitated in the line of duty. Officers in Kenya are not covered by any insurance policy apart from the National Hospital Insurance Fund.

In Mombasa yesterday, an officer who requested anonymity told the Star officers injured get Sh50,000 and Sh21,000 to families of officers killed in the line of duty. Ruto said the insurance cover forms part of the reforms in the taskforce. "The government has improved salaries and allowances for officers as well," said Ruto.

He said these are parts of measures put in place to ensure that the police force is run professionally and fight crime, some of which are committed by both active and retired or dismissed police officers.

"We will expand and modernise the police transport and equipment. The government has approved an enhancement of police allowances and the improvement of police housing," he said. He said the deplorable conditions that police officers live in will soon be a thing of the past with the improvement of their housing units.

He said the government will roll out a programme that will ensure only professional are recruited in the force."Those involved in acts of criminalities will have to leave so that we have a professional police force," he said.

Meanwhile, Ruto assured investors and tourists of security in the country. He said the Nyumba Kumi initiative is also meant to enhance security by ensuring that even the locals take part in security matters.
