Insurer of Ohio doctor found negligent sues
The insurer for a Cincinnati spine doctor found negligent in performing surgery on a patient wants to be let off the hook for paying for his defense and any financial awards to his patients.
The Cincinnati Enquirer (http://cin.ci/1mQc3ey ) reports that the Medical Protective Co. filed a federal lawsuit this month asking a judge to rescind Dr. Abubakar Atiq Durrani's (ah-boo-BAY'-ker AH'-teek duhr-AH'-nees) medical malpractice policy.
The Indiana-based company argues that Durrani breached his policy by fleeing to Pakistan.
More than 170 former patients have sued Durrani, claiming he performed unnecessary surgeries. Federal criminal charges accuse Durrani of fraudulently billing Medicare millions of dollars.
Last week, a jury found Durrani negligent in the first of those cases. The patient was awarded $750,000.
