Cornerstone Insurance Plc has flagged off a campaign aimed
at educating school pupils the role and need for insurance in the economy.
The company at one – day Financial Literacy and Consumer
Education programme, held today Thursday at Oregun High School in Lagos,
gathered pupils from 10 secondary schools to educated them on how insurance can
impact and secure their lives.
The firm’s Head, Brand Management, Ademola Mafikuyomi,
said the initiate was designed to inculcate in the pupils saving, insurance
culture and how they can also have a secured future.
“Our objective is to educate and help them imbibe
insurance culture. We are interested in educating them on how they can have
secure future irrespective of risks that occur to them.
“Considering the population of our economy and the insurance
penetration, we have fundamental challenge in our hands. And to tackle this
challenge, we believe it is important we go to the grassroots to educate young
people.
“We are poised to catch them young. We are hopeful that
when we make necessary impact on them, they will grow with the culture and embrace
insurance. We are looking at how the children as influencer, influence their parents
to buy insurance,” he said.
He said the company will take the initiative to all nook
and cranny of Lagos State, adding that the company has a cardinal programme to
reach out to young people this year.
He
noted that the initiative will be properly monitored to ensure that the
objectives are achieved.
The
Representative of Lagos State Ministry of Education Farinloye Olumide, lauded
the effort made by cornerstone in reaching out to the pupils to educated them.
He called on other operators to give priority to awareness especially now that
insurance has been made a subject in secondary schools.
He
noted that the initiative to educate the pupils on how insurance can improve
their lives, will help the operators grow their businesses and the public mitigate
risks.
Deputy
Director Inspectorate, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) Faruna Monday,
said the commission will continue to support such a noble initiative which is
targeted at enhancing insurance awareness.
He
noted that NAICOM would continue to persuade insurance firms to reach out and educate
the public on the need for insurance which is the hub of the economy.
Schools
at the event include: Army Children Senior High School; Agidingbi Senior Grammar
School; Omole Senior Grammar School; Army Cantonment Senior Secondary School;
Opebi Senior Grammar School; State Senior High School; Oregun Senior High School;
Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Secondary School and Ikeja Senior High School.
