Imo broadcast pensioners protest against 40 months arrears

Okorocha

The Pensioners Association of Imo Broadcasting Corporation has given the State Government 10months ultimatum to pay the 40 months pension arrears owed to retirees of the corporation.

The retirees, who converged on the premises of the corporation in Owerri on Thursday, urged the government to pay their arrears in four installments from March to Dec. 2014.

The Chairman of the association, Mr Chidi Madu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Gov. Rochas Okorocha’s administration inherited five months pension arrears from the past administration.

He said that seven members of the association had died due to lack of financial wherewithal to access medical treatment.

Madu added that government constituted a technical team in 2012 to look into the issue of non-payment of their pension.

Madu said the association would not relent in its agitation for payment of the entitlements, adding that they would continue with the protest until government met their demands.

"We will never stop to protest because the government is not doing anything to solve the problem’, he said.

The Chief of Staff to the State Government, Chief Jude Ejiogu, assured the protesters that their complaints would be forwarded to the governor.

He said they were demanding for their rights, but urged them not to prevent the workers of the corporation from carrying out their duties.

Ejiogu commended the retirees for the peaceful protest and promised them that the government would soon look into the complaint. (NAN)
