The E.U. insurance industry remains fragmented despite the sector being a mainstay of the region's financial sector, sources say, EurActiv reports.
Currently, European insurers have about €8.5 trillion ($9.185 trillion) of assets under management.
Figures from Insurance Europe show that insurers' investments now constitute more than 50% of all institutional investment in Europe.
European insurance markets have traditionally remained national due to various factors, thereby adding additional costs to the price of premiums for cross-border customers, an official said.
