PenCom partners University of Edinburgh on capacity building

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) poised to improve leadership and managerial skills, has collaborated with the Business School of the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, to train some members of its staff.

A statement by the Head, Communication PenCom Emeka Onuora, noted that the training, which held in Abuja between March 16 and 20, 2015; featured presentations and a case study workshop facilitated by leading international experts on leadership strategy and sustainable development.

Participants were drawn from the managerial cadre in the Commission and were equipped with the necessary skills to translate things learnt during the programme into actions in the workplace while facilitators took turns to answer questions on issues raised by participants.

The programme with the theme, “Executive Education Programme: Sustainability Strategy, Leadership and Management for the Public Sector,” was delivered by the Sustainable Business Initiative (SBI) of Edinburgh University, United Kingdom during which participants were granted access to the institution’s virtual learning environment.

Participants were taken through some topics including Orchestrating Winning Strategies, Strategic Leadership, Role of Pension Funds in Corporate Governance, Governance of Pension Funds, Regulations of Pension Funds, Sustainability: Overview and Global Trends; Aviation Infrastructure and Africa’s Development and Environmental, Social and Governmental (ESG) Integration across Asset Classes – an Investor’s Perspective.

The Director of the Sustainable Business Initiative (SBI), University of Edinburgh; Dr. Kenneth Amaeshi, said participants were given insights from researches on Sustainable Development, Pension Funds Management, and Leveraging Pension Funds for Infrastructure Development, Strategy and Sustainable Leadership.

“We have developed tools and training capabilities to equip managers and decision-makers with the requisite skills to create and implement sustainable strategies, in this way, linking academia with practice,” Amaeshi stated.

Other facilitators at the programme include Dr. Tazeeb Rajwani, Senior Lecturer in Strategic Management and Director of Government Affairs Research Club at Cranfield University, United Kingdom; Professor Amon Chizema, a Chair in International Business strategy and Head of International Business, Strategy and Innovation at Loughborough University; and Martin Currie, Professor of Finance and Investment at the Business School of the University of Edinburgh; Martina Macpherson, founder of the Sustainable Investment Partners (SI), a consulting firm specialising in strategy consulting business development and investment analysis services; and Adun Okupe, the Africapitalism Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh.

Founded in 2011 on the pillar of research, engagement and teaching, SBI is domiciled at the Business School, University of Edinburgh and had developed into a world-class and reputable initiative.

Lawal is Inspen 2014 insurance man of the year

The former President Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) Fatai Lawal has emerged the 2014 Inspenonline Insurance Man of the year.

Fatai who is the the Managing Director Sterling Assurance Nigeria Limited was named today, at the Nigerian Insurance and Pension Award organised by Inspenonline.

Chief Executive Officer Inspenonline Media, Chuks Udo Okonta, said Lawal was picked from the votes casted by the public and other considerations made by the award's panel of assessors.

He noted that the winner raised the bar at the the Institute and the industry by opting to serve a tenure which was eventful and impactful. He added that amongst the legacies left by the winner was the printing and donation of Insurance books to secondary and tertiary institutions aimed at deepening insurance awareness.

Okonta noted that the award, which started two years ago with the recognition of two distinguished individuals and an underwriting company, has now come to stay.

"This year, we decided to raise the bar by setting high standards to judge the operations of companies and impacts made by individuals in moving insurance and pension business forward.

"To achieve this, we gave the public the opportunity to select those to be celebrated by calling for votes. Having harmonised the votes which came from different parts of the country, we benchmarked the scores with the set standard to arrive at the winners we are celebrating today," he said.

Others winners are AIICO Insurance Plc, Insurance company of the year; FUG Pensions Limited, Pension Fund Administrator of the Year; YOA Insurance Brokers Limited and Glanvill Enthoven Insurance Brokers Limited, Insurance Broker of the year.

Professional Excellence Award went to Professor Joe Irukwu; Best Professional Group went to the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria and Association of Registered Insurance Agents of Nigeria; Corporate Brand went to Mansard Insurance Plc and Leadway Assurance Limited while Corporate Social Responsibility Award was won by Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc.

The organisers also recognised organisations that distinguished themselves, with Excellence Award. Organisations in this category include the National Pension Commission, Lagos State Pension Commission, Goldlink Insurance Plc and Pension Transition Administration Directorate.
