Insurance operators in the country have been told to improve their relationship with the media to deepen insurance awareness.
The Commissioner for Insurance and helmsman, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) Fola Daniel, made this call at a training programme organised by the commission for journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State.
He noted that gone are the days when operators were media shy, adding that the media plays great role in public education. He said insurance operators have no choice but to engage the media regularly to help inform the public of their activities.
Daniel noted that the insurance industry is doing much which the public is not aware of due to the poor relationship existing between the operators and the media.
He said most insurance companies pay large claims without making it public, he stressed that the perception that insurers do not pay claims will be stemmed, when operators make public their claims payments through the media.
He lauded media professionals for their supports, stressing that the activities of the commission have been made known through the media, while pledging that the commission will sustain the relationship it has established with the media.
Daniel told the leadership of the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) to regularly engage the media and ensure that necessary supports are given to media professionals.
The Director-General NIA, Sunday Thomas, pledged continuous support for the media, stressing that the media has really helped the industry by setting agendas that have led to creative thinking.
He said efforts such as presentations of awards, workshops and summits organised by some media professionals have help shaped activities in the industry.
