Insurer to pay Rs 60,000 to family robbed on trip

By Rebecca Samervel

An insurance company will have to pay $900 (Rs 59,400) to a family from Goregaon that was robbed in Kuala Lumpur in 2010.

The family, Balchandra, Sunila and Akshaya Sawant, had bought travel insurance from the Reliance Insurance Company Ltd and it was valid from October 25, 2010, to November 7, 2010.

They went on a holiday to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore from October 26, 2010.

The three arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on October 30, 2010. On the same day, they were attacked and robbed of $2,500 and their documents while sightseeing.

After registering a complaint with the local police station, Balchandra called up the insurance company back in the city and sought the insurance amount.

The company told him that as he had a credit card, there was no need to compensate him. Balchandra told the company that he had left his credit card back home, but it did not listen to him.

Balchandra said he had to face agony and inconvenience. He filed a complaint on November 15, 2011, in the Mumbai Suburban District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum.

The insurance company filed its reply and said the problem was not such that it would cause an impediment to the tour schedule of the Sawants.

The forum held that there was no stipulation in the policy that in the presence of a credit card, no compensation would be given.
