NIA embarks on research to evolve suitable products for entertainment industry

The accident office committee of the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has embarked on research to develop the classes of insurance suitable for the entertainment industry, Inspen has learnt.

The committee disclosed this in a report submitted to the association, adding that it has collated some documents on the entertainment industry, which will aid the research.

It was gathered that the move stemmed from the lack of customize products to carter for entertainers who often solicit for help whenever they suffer any risk.

Industry observers believe that the development of customize products, that suit the need of the industry, will endear insurance to the entertainers who presently are yet to embrace insurance as a tool to mitigate risks.

A Movie Producer and Actor, Chidi Mokeme, made a demand to insurers at a forum for brokers some years ago, asking insurers to design celebrity covers capable of addressing the peculiar insurance needs of players in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

“Musicians may want to insure their voices, dancers and stand-up comedians may want to insure their legs, actors and actresses may even want to insure other parts of their body such that in the event that they lose their cherished organs and may not actively ply their trade, insurance companies would come to their rescue.

“Such policies should cover liabilities arising from third party images that could possibly be affected negatively as a result of words used and things done by entertainers in the course of their duty. If in the course of acting a movie, accidents might occur resulting to loss of lives and or damage to third party properties including houses and household equipments. This type of policy would take care of liabilities arising from such things,” he said.
