Insurance agent get RM100,000 fine, jail time and rotan for cheating

By Hidir Reduan

An insurance agent was sentenced to six years jail, six rotan strokes and RM100,000 fine today after being found guilty of two counts of cheating his friend's mother.

Sessions Court judge Mat Ghani Abdullah ruled that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt against accused Tee Wei Chiang, 29.

"The accused(Tee) failed to raise reasonable doubt in the prosecution's case," he said.

According to the two charges, Tee had induced Wong Kok Foong, 59, to bank in a total of RM800,000 into his Maybank account.

Wong had made the payments because she was induced to believe Tee would help her purchase three investment-linked insurance policies from insurance provider Great Eastern.

The two offences took place at a Maybank branch at Taman Setapak and a location at Taman Kepong here respectively, between 9.55am on Feb 22 and 3pm on April 16, 2012.

Wong lodged a police report on June 4, 2013, leading to Tee's arrest 20 days later.

During mitigation today, Tee's counsel Mohd Alizar Abd Razak pleaded for a lenient sentence because his client had just married recently.

Mohd Alizar said Tee had to look after his retiree-parents as well as his wife and a child aged less than a year old.

Deputy public prosecutor Amira Sariaty Zainal urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence because Tee had abused the trust Wong had placed in him.

Mat Ghani then sentenced Tee to five years jail, three rotan strokes and RM50,000 fine for the first offence and six years jail, three rotan strokes and RM50,000 fine for the second offence.

He ordered the sentences to run concurrently from today and ordered Tee to serve an additional 20 months jail if he fails to pay the fine.

However, Mat Ghani allowed Mohd Alizar's application for stay of execution pending appeal.

Mat Ghani ordered Tee's bail be raised to RM30,000 with one surety and that he surrender his passport to the court. Tee was previously out on RM15,000 bail.
