ADDRESS BY MR. BOLA TEMOWO, PRESIDENT, CHARTERED INSURANCE INSTITUTE OF NIGERIA DURING THE VISIT OF THE PRESIDENT AND GOVERNING BOARD OF THE NIGERIAN COUNCIL OF REGISTERED INSURANCE BROKERS

ADDRESS BY MR. BOLA TEMOWO, PRESIDENT, CHARTERED INSURANCE INSTITUTE OF NIGERIA DURING THE VISIT OF THE PRESIDENT AND GOVERNING BOARD OF THE NIGERIAN COUNCIL OF REGISTERED INSURANCE BROKERS ON WEDNESDAY JULY 16TH, 2014 IN THE CHARTERED INSURANCE INSTITUTE OF NIGERIA.

PROTOCOLS
I have the utmost delight in welcoming you on this august occasion of your visit to our great Institute. This visit cannot be better timed than now when the Industry is in dire need of stronger bonds of co-operation in tackling its abiding external and internal challenges.

APPRECIATION

I must express the appreciation of the Governing Council of the Institute for the continuous support, of the Council and teeming members of the NCRIB. Let me also appreciate the Broking profession for its immense contributions to the growth of the Institute and the Insurance Industry as a whole. We will continue to enlist your support in joining hands with us to ensure that the goals and objectives of the Institute and the Industry as a whole remain on course.

I must acknowledge and appreciate the support of the NCRIB President and other leading lights of NCRIB at my Investiture Ceremony on Thursday 19th June, 2014. I sincerely thank you all for making me proud and for believing in me. In its 55 years of existence, the goals and objectives of our Institute and rallying point remain:

1. Promoting insurance education through the following means:
(a) Conducting professional and certificate examinations for the purpose of registering eligible persons as Insurance Practitioners:
(b) Organizing Conferences, workshops, seminars and Courses on insurance and related subjects;
(c) Encouraging and assisting insurance professionals to regularly update their knowledge in order to respond positively to changes in the business environment and meet the challenging needs of their clients:
(d) Producing publications on insurance and related subject;
(e) Providing and maintaining libraries comprising books and publications for the advancement of the knowledge of insurance.

2. Promoting the general development of insurance by conducting, encouraging and assisting in the conduct of research into insurance and allied subjects with special emphasis on local practices, laws and conditions.
3. Upholding and encouraging members to adhere strictly to the observance of the industry’s codes of conduct and ethics for a healthy practice of the insurance profession.
4. Creating insurance awareness among the general public through various social activities like the annual dinner, picnic, fitness walk, sports and the use of the electronic & print media.

The promotion of these goals and objectives is the collective responsibility of all of us and it behoves us to remain loyal and committed to the Institute at all times. This was and remains the oath of allegiance which we all swore to as Fellows, Associates and Senior Members of this great Institute.

ENSURING CONTINUITY

Although change is a desirable phenomenon, we must not lose sight of the efficacy of continuity in all human endeavours. Let me therefore reiterate my resolve in ensuring continuity as encapsulated in my acceptance speech with the theme: PROMOTING THE LEGACY OF CONTINUITY. I did say that I have not come to lay a new foundation but to continue the march towards greatness. This belief is borne out of my resolve in seeing that the vision of our founding fathers remains a driving force.

Let me acknowledge the fact that the Doctrine of Continuity has been snowballing in the last few years, culminating in our decision to begin a campaign to institutionalize it today. For example, the following have continued to feature in the agendas of my predecessors:

Institute’s Victoria Island building project
The development of the College of Insurance and Financial Management
Promoting the relevance of Insurance in national consciousness
Developing the platforms for Insurance Education
Establishment of greater Industry bonding

In promoting the strong benefits of continuity and its significance as the most expedient course to chart in order to reposition our institute for greater relevance, my presidency will focus on the following:

Resuscitating the development of the Institute’s building in Victoria Island

Commencement of Academic Activities at the College of Insurance and Financial Management and its eventual commissioning.

Establishment of an E-Library

Strengthening the study and teaching of Insurance in Secondary Schools and Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria through the ‘Train the Trainer" programme for insurance teachers in Secondary Schools and empowerment and capacity building for insurance lecturers in Tertiary Institutions.

Provision of adequately trained manpower at the Institute Secretariat for improved service delivery

May I state at this juncture the crucial areas where collaborative efforts would be beneficial to all the Arms of the Insurance Industry, they include:

The Joint Media Retreat
Having a Joint Annual Mega Conference; this will promote unity and relevance of the Insurance Industry.
Encouraging NCRIB members to register with the Institute as Insurance Practitioners.

JOINT MEDIA RETREAT

The reasons for a combined effort of all Arms of the Insurance Industry in Nigeria to hold a unified retreat for members of the Press/Media, was the need for the Insurance Industry as whole to carry the media along in light of the exemplary qualities of the present leadership of the National Association of Insurance Correspondents (NAICO). The Retreat is to be used as a platform to foster a better relationship with NAICO considering the new direction of the Insurance Industry and to send out positive messages of cooperation and collaboration within the industry.

Let me say that Arms of Industry, including NCRIB had held useful meetings and reached vital decisions which led to the choice of a budget sharing formular and date for the Retreat. But for a last minute issue, the retreat would have held in May, 2014.

JOINT ANNUAL CONFERENCE

As we march towards a unipolar industry with common interests, our proposed Joint Annual Conference must be considered as a major area of strength. The Conference, no doubt will usher in a new dawn and create a common front for us all. Given the strength in size, the force of the expected large number of delegates would be an attraction for attendance at our Conference by government functionaries, officials and other dignitaries. Discussions in this regard had commenced in the past and need to be concluded.

MEMBERSHIP OF THE INSTITUTE

The Institute will continue to evolve ways and means of boosting its membership which by statute is open to all practitioners in the insurance industry irrespective of their specialization or areas of calling.

I cannot end this address without reiterating the benefits for greater bonding between the NCRIB and CIIN, especially in the areas of
Sharing common goals in training and manpower development.
Co-operation and collaboration
Attendance at all CIIN events
Support for the College of Insurance as the emerging platform for the Industry training and manpower development
Developing common frontiers in events and programmes planning
Minimizing and ultimately eliminating scattered efforts.
Protecting our Industry from loss of identity in the eyes of the various tiers of government.
Recognizing and according due respect to our Industry Elders (Supporting the course of the Elders’ Forum).
Canvassing greater support for manpower development as the regulatory responsibility of CIIN.
Providing mentorship for the up-and-coming generation of Insurance practitioners in order to enhance professionalism and also to ensure continuity.

It is my belief that this visit will reinforce our collective efforts as we march in unison in quest of an Industry of excellence.

Permit me to acknowledge the efforts of the successive leadership of NCRIB for strengthening the body of Insurance Brokers in Nigeria and for advancing strong grounds for effective intermediation in the channel of delivery of insurance products and services.

Once again, I welcome you to the Council Chambers of our great Institute while urging you to see this visit as home coming as you are all members of the CIIN by right.

Thank you for your attention and God bless.
