CHANDIGARH: The UT District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed an insurance company to pay Rs 72,000 to a complainant for not settling the claim of a dead cow that the company had insured.
The complainant, Parwinder Singh of Fatehgarh Sahib, had bought 14 cows and got them insured from the National Insurance Company Limited in Sector 17, Chandigarh. All cows were inspected by a government doctor and the firm got inserted microchips in cows. The insurance was valid from May 10, 2011, to May 9, 2014.
Out of 14 insured cows, one died on June 11, 2012. The insurance company was informed about it with required documents.
The post-mortem of the cow was conducted by a local government veterinary doctor and after recovery of the microchip from the body, the same was handed over to the firm, but it did nothing. Thereafter, the complainant served it a legal notice.
The consumer court in its order said the cow died during the period of the insurance policy. It was insured for Rs 50,000. "We feel that the insurance company without any valid reason has denied the claim to the complainant which tantamounts to deficiency in service," the court added.
Thus, the firm was directed to pay Rs 50,000 as the insured amount of the cow along with Rs 15,000 on account of deficiency in service, unfair trade practice and causing mental agony and harassment and Rs 7,000 as cost of litigation.
The order is to be complied with in 30 days of its receipt by the firm.
