Insurance lawyers chart way for industry

2014 INSURANCE LAWYERS’ FORUM


The maiden Insurance Lawyers’ Forum was held from Wednesday 26th February – Friday 28th February 2014 at the Equity Resort Hotel, Ijebu-Ode.



The Forum which had about 60 participants in attendance was a 2 – day intensive and practical meet on the Role of Insurance Lawyers in the development of the Insurance Business in Nigeria.

The participants were drawn from about 46 companies and Broking Firms in Nigeria.



The opening address was given by Prof. J. O. Irukwu.



The sessions were handled by experts, and personalities who have made their marks in both the Insurance and the Law professions. The main theme paper of the forum, "Role of Lawyers in the development of Insurance Business in Nigeria was professionally handled and delivered by Chief Anthony .I. Idigbe (SAN) a thorough bred professional who has carved a niche for himself in both the Legal and Corporate Life of the country.



Mr Olusina Sofola, SAN handled the topic Insurance Lawyers’ and Good Corporate Governance, while Prof. C. K. Agomo of the University of Lagos deftly delivered the paper on Landmark cases in Insurance.



Insurance Act 2003. Any need for review? Was handled by a Representative of Barr O.O. Ladipo-Ajayi while, Barrister (Dr) Talmiz Usman the Company Secretary of NAICOM handled both the papers on Micro Insurance, and Insurance Business and Regulations.



The Forum was laced with an evening of socials and interactions on Wednesday 26th February 2014.



Feedbacks from the facilitators and participants have been compiled and the observations drawn from them point to the following;


The initiative was a laudable one and should be supported.
The Forum should be made an annual event, giving more time to interactions, and exchange of ideas, in subsequent editions.
Need for the scope to be widened to cover the West African sub Region in the first instance, and later the African continent. This may be achieved with support from WAICA and AIO.
Publication of the timeless papers presented at the Forum.
Need for the establishment of a Forum of Insurance Lawyers in Nigeria.


The Managing Partner of Adegboyega Adepegba & Co, the Corporate Law firm that organised the Forum has described the development as wonderful and a pointer to the readiness of the Insurance Industry for knowledge, change and development.



The former Director-General of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria expressed its appreciation to the Managements of the 46 Companies, Insurance and Broking firms, including NIA and NCRIB that sent participants to the Forum for their vision for a new Insurance Industry.



He released the programmes of his firms as follows.


To work assiduously in resuscitating the Insurance Law Association of Nigeria under the chairmanship of Prof J. O. Irukwu.

The Insurance Lawyers’ Forum will be an annual programme for Lawyers and compliance managers in Nigeria and will be extended to the West African Sub-Region and Africa in subsequent years.

The Ombudsman – Journal of Insurance Law, a publication of Adegboyega Adepegba & Co will be unveiled by April 2014. The journal will circulate all around the Continent of Africa.

Plans are under way to incorporate the Insurance Law Academy – a citadel of knowledge with the sole purpose of bringing out the best from the admixture of Insurance and Law.
