The Director-General Nigerian Insurers
Association (NIA), Sunday Thomas, has called on insurers to consider the
insecurity in the economy as a challenge and start thinking beyond available
products to evolve products that can provide adequate protection for the public
as they go about their duties.
He told Inspen that nations bedevilled
by terrorism, have been able evolved insurance policies that provide succour for
their people.
“The
state of insecurity in the economy has thrown-up a challenge for the insurance
industry. Until 1979 when we had the Seweto crisis, terrorism insurance did not
take up in South Africa. What the situation is telling us is that we should
start to think beyond the available products and try to see what we can do to
bring about protection for people and also put the mind of people at rest so
that they can go about freely doing their jobs.
“About
10 years ago, if you mention terrorism in Nigeria, it looks like abstract
occurrence, but it is with us today,” he said.
