Lagos, transporters plan life insurance for passengers

By Sesan Olufowobi

Lagos State Government says it is making arrangement with major transport operators in the state to insure passengers against death.

The government said the policy would make it mandatory for operators to insure passengers up to the sum of N2m in case of death and N100,000 as burial expenses.

The major transport operators comprise the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Government Buses, among others.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Kayode Opeifa, said this at a press briefing in Lagos on Friday.

Opeifa said, "Under this policy, a passenger, driver and conductor that suffer permanent disability in an accident will receive N1m as compensation, while those that are injured will be entitled to N200,000 as medical expenses."

The commissioner said the relevant agencies of government would no longer arrest those who have proof that they had commenced processing of the new driving license.
