‘Insurance agent’ dupes Navi Mumbai doctor of Rs 24k

By George Mendonca

A 36-year-old Nerul doctor, Amol Ashok Sawai, was allegedly swindled off Rs 24,000 by one Punit Pal, who pretended to be an insurance agent. The man tried to sell the doctor vehicle insurance and asked for a cheque of Rs 24,000.

"In February, the agent assured Sawai that he hand over a cheque for Rs 24,000 and he would fill in the name of the company. The doctor thought he could trust the agent and gave him the cheque," said assistant police inspector Sachin Hire.

On March 8, the doctor realized that the money was debited but it was not credited to an insurance company's account. He tried to call Pal but his phones were switched off. "Sawai then contacted the insurance company who said that they didn't have anyone by Pal's description in the organization," said Hire.

Sawai then approached the cops. The police believe that Pal may have duped other people as well and are investigating the case.
