Nigeria to introduce insurance scheme for pupils in primary schools

Nigeria would soon introduce the health insurance for pupils in public primary schools nationwide, the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) said on Thursday.The programme would commence at the end of this year to drive the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the

Executive Secretary of NHIS, Dr Femi Thomas, told participants at the opening of a two-day workshop for zonal and state coordinators across the country in Enugu.

He said that 40 per cent funding for the programme would come from the Federal Government, while state governments would contribute 60 per cent.

The executive secretary said NHIS was also planning to introduce Mobile Health Insurance Scheme to accommodate workers in the informal sector.

He said more than 20 million Nigerians were expected to be covered in the mobile scheme.
