The insurance industry saw a small increase in employment with the addition of 8,700 jobs for the month of May, according to the latest employment numbers from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics released on Thursday, July 2, 2015.
The Economic Situation Report revealed that the insurance industry grew by 0.34 percent last month and now sits at 2,543,200 employed insurance workers with an unemployment rate of 2.0 percent. Over the past 12 months, the total number of employed insurance workers has increased by 80,600 or 3.27 percent from 2.46 million in June 2015, while the unemployment rate dropped by 1.5 percent from 3.5 percent.
Insurance carriers and related activities made up more than half of the job growth within the finance and insurance sector, which grew by 14,700 jobs last month. Over the last 12 months, the insurance carriers and related activities subsector has contributed 67 percent to its parent sector, or 40,300 jobs.
Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 223,000 jobs in June, while the unemployment rate declined by 0.2 percentage points to 5.3 percent. Over the last 12 months, employment growth has averaged 250,000 jobs per month. Job gains occurred within professional and business services (64,000 jobs), health care (40,000), retail trade (33,000), financial activities (20,000), and within transportation and warehousing (17,000).
After revisions, total nonfarm payroll employment for the month of April and May were revised from 221,000 to 187,000 jobs, and 280,000 to 254,000 jobs, respectively. With these revisions, employment gains in April and May were 60,000 lower than previously reported. Over the past 3 months, job gains have averaged 221,000 per month.
