ADDRESS BY MR. BOLA TEMOWO, PRESIDENT AND CHAIRMAN OF COUNCIL, CHARTERED INSURANCE INSTITUTE OF NIGERIA DURING A COURTESY VISIT TO THE NIGERIA INSURERS ASSOCIATION ON THURSDAY AUGUST 28, 2014.
PROTOCOLS
It is a great delight to be here today on the occasion of yet another opportunity to reinforce the bonds of intra-industry unity and co-operation. This being one of my major visits since assuming the Presidency of our great Institute, I wish to acknowledge the fact that the visit occupies a prime position in my itinerary.
Let me express my sincere appreciation of your acceptance to receive us today, especially on this unique platform offered by the presence of Council members of the Association. Let me also convey the Goodwill of the Governing Council and teeming members of our Institute for the progress the NIA has continued to record in ensuring that the Underwriting Arm continues to act in unison.
I must thank you immensely for being part of the success of my Investiture as the 46th President of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria on Thursday
19th June, 2014 at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
I wish to seize this opportunity in stating that, we are charting a new course aimed at entrenching the culture and legacy of continuity. It is pertinent to reiterate that the Legacy of Continuity will be driven by means of an articulated action-plan geared at reinforcing the identified projects and ensuring their logical conclusion. This approach will also engender a Rolling Plan for the growth and development of our Institute
In pursuit of the theme of my Presidency; "Promoting the Legacy of Continuity, we have identified the following and have commenced their implementation. These are:
Resuscitating the development of the Institute’s building in Victoria Island
Commencement of Academic Activities at the College of Insurance and Financial Management
Establishment of an E-Library
Strengthening the study and teaching of Insurance in Secondary Schools and tertiary Institutions in Nigeria
Provision of adequately trained manpower at the Institute Secretariat for improved service delivery
Distinguished colleagues, the gains of creating a premium position for our industry in the financial services sector and the economy as a whole must remain our commitment. Let me assure that the Institute is receptive to ideas and suggestions geared at guaranteeing success of the projects listed earlier on. Together, we can make a difference and conquer new heights in our abiding quest for a greater future for our Institute and the Insurance Industry as a whole.
As we all know, professionalism is the bedrock of our business. I will therefore enjoin all our colleagues to always act professionally, particularly now that our national economy has been rebased. This is the only way we can guarantee that this industry taps fully from growth potentials of the buoyed economy. No amount of awareness campaign will be effective without our individual and collective efforts at advancing our profession by benchmarking international standards.
It is my firm belief that we will continue to march forward as an industry and surmount all the challenges facing our profession, if the Industry Arms continue to act in concert at all times. The CIIN has the major role of providing ample opportunities for education and knowledge sharing and will continue to promote human capital development to guarantee better service delivery. The Institute has therefore continued to initiate and adopt new measures aimed at attracting more attendance at the major education and training programmes. For example, the choice of themes and topics have been diversified to cover a wide range of subjects with global outlook and relevance to professional development. We hope to explore this approach in the creation of greater interest in and commitment to the huge benefits of continuous education for all practitioners.
On behalf of our Governing Council, I wish to acknowledge NIA’s co-operation and contribution, especially in the following areas;
Recognition and support for the CIIN as the Training and Educational Arm of the Industry.
The establishment and sustenance of the Insurance Industry Consultative Council (IICC) as a uniform platform for intra-industry co-operation. And
The initiation and planned hosting of a Joint Media Retreat coming up from Tuesday 9th to Thursday 11th September, 2014 at Continental Suites, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The benefits of the Retreat cannot be overemphasized, especially its unifying nature in the scheme of things.
Permit me to state that the College of Insurance and Financial Management is becoming firmly rooted with the far-reaching developments on the construction of the major structures for the take-off of Academic Activities in September 2014. Let me however reiterate the need for more collaboration by Arms of the Insurance Industry on the financing of the progressing projects through individual and corporate sponsorship. I wish to call on the NIA to etch its name in gold at the college by adopting one of the projects. Member companies are also invited to support the College project, following the exemplary gesture of Leadway Assurance with the sole sponsorship of the College Restaurant
Let me end this address by dwelling briefly on the Institute’s E-membership initiative which is aimed at improving communication with members across the country. The major hindrance to effective communication has been found to be the dearth of information on members. We have therefore activated the online membership portals geared at bridging the communication gap with members.
Let me seize this opportunity in inviting you to the 2014 Professionals’ Forum holding from 10th to 13th September at the Green Legacy Resort, Abeokuta, Ogun State. It promises to be a rewarding experience for all.
I must thank you, once again for this wonderful opportunity to be here today.
Thank you for your attention and God bless.
BOLA TEMOWO, FCII, FIIN
President/Chairman of Council
Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria
