Ebola: Insurance agents take awareness campaign round Lagos

By Bola Badmus

The Association of Registered Insurance Agents of Nigeria (ARIAN), on Friday, staged a solidarity work on streets of Lagos over the need to curb the spread and eradicate Ebola virus through public enlightenment.

The group, led by its president, Mr Gbadebo Olameran, carried out an awareness campaign to members of the public, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), on how to avoid contracting the deadly disease.

According to Olameran, free hand gloves and sanitiser were given out members of the public as well as members of the NURTW, especially the bus conductors, who he said usually had regular contact with the commuter due to nature of their work.

Olameran said through the enlightenment and awareness carried out by his member, Lagosians were alerted of the danger of Ebola virus and the need to avoid contracting it through avoiding body contact, use of hand gloves and washing one’s hands, while applying sanitiser.

He also praised the government on its declaration to get a life insurance for volunteers in the treatment of the deadly disease, but noted that insurance should be a thing to be done before outbreak of any disaster and not after.

Addressing the campaigners, Chairman, Committee on Health, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Suuru Avoseh, assured that both the federal and state governments had not relented in getting treatment for the disease and also ensuring that the diseased was not spread.

According to the lawmaker, who stood in for Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji, the positive collaboration of the state and Federal governments had ensured that Nigeria was not after all clueless concerning the treatment of the deadly disease, saying that the recent re-ordering of the state budget showed that Lagos State government was pro-active in addressing the danger posed by the virus.
