Kenya Orient unveils cover for commercial vehicles

BY Philip Mwakio

Insurance firm, Kenya Orient Insurance Limited has unveiled a new cover to support the rapidly growing transport sector.

Orient Commercial Insurance, as the new product is known, is a comprehensive motor commercial insurance that covers trucks all across the Comesa region.

Kenya Orient Managing Director, Muema Muindi, said the Orient Commercial Insurance offers cover including personal accident for both the driver and loader, security for goods being ferried and vehicle on location. It also offers cover against riots, strike and civil commotion and extra benefits like a full tracking service and has a ‘No Blame, No Excess’ feature.

"We have no doubt this product will be a catalyst for growth in the transport sector, which is a key driver for our economy as Kenya works towards Vision 2030. It will also give investors in the transport business a peace of mind," said Muindi during the launch at Nyali Golf Club, Mombasa. He said the choice to launch the product in Mombasa was deliberate because the city was not only a transport hub, but also the gateway to the rest of Africa. Mombasa, is also where the company first set shop.

In 2008, Kenya Orient became the first insurance company to use mobile telephony to sell insurance. Dubbed Safari Bima, the product has been recognised in international forums as a great innovation for micro-insurance. Last year the firm launched the first stand-alone mobile phone insurance cover known as Orient Mobile.
