PROTOCOLS
It affords me great pleasure to be here today in furtherance of the commitment of our Governing Council to strengthen the teaching and study of Insurance in Nigeria.
Let me reiterate that our focal point has remained the development of the significant signposts for entrenching a lasting legacy in the promotion and sustenance of Insurance Education and of ensuring that the growing population embrace Insurance as a preferred course of study and career path.
INSURANCE TEXTBOOK FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS
The institute’s production of the book ‘Insurance for Senior Secondary Schools’ represents a major leap in this direction and culminates in today’s presentation of the book to the Lagos State Ministry of Education. In the same breadth, the donation of three copies of the book to each of the Public Secondary Schools in the state, is not only a significant landmark but also part of our commitment geared at accelerating the empowerment of institutions offering insurance courses across Nigeria. Permit me to state that the Institute had also donated course books for our professional examinations to over fifteen Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria at the cost of N600,000 for each Institution. ICT equipment were donated to four out of these to equip their insurance libraries as study centres.
All of these represent our articulated efforts at expanding the capacity of institutions offering insurance programmes thereby guiding them pragmatically towards the improvement of their capacity to deliver superior and qualitative insurance education.
TRAIN THE TRAINERS INITIATIVE
We are no doubt aware of the challenges regarding the dearth of teachers and lecturers for insurance at both secondary and tertiary levels of education in Nigeria. To tackle this dilemma, the institute has initiated a campaign to encourage insurance professionals to take up teaching positions either on full time or part time basis. The Institute is also gearing up to commence training courses for insurance instructors in secondary schools. This is to aid non-insurance graduates e.g. business studies teachers with the skills needed to deliver insurance lectures for senior secondary examinations.
The Institute is also encouraging Insurance Companies to adopt a Secondary or Tertiary Institution in their neighbourhood and support such school with lecturers and equipment.
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, our Institute is continually committed to the actualization of its statutory responsibilities as enshrined in Decree No: 22 (Now Act) of 1993 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Chief of these is the determination of the standards of skill and knowledge for the ethical and professional delivery of insurance services in Nigeria. Therefore, the promotion of insurance education is not only a key to unlocking the huge potentials of our industry but also a means of opening the doors to the younger generation who represent the insurance practitioners of tomorrow.
GOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS
Honourable Commissioner, Distinguished Cabinet members, the establishment of the Insurance Industry Consultative Council in 2013 was a milestone in the evolution of a veritable platform for effective Governmental Relations. It is a platform to present a strong united voice for our industry and guarantee that Arms of the industry do not act at cross purposes. Let me state that the Industry acknowledges the contributions of Lagos State to the creation of Insurance consciousness through exemplary patronage of Insurance services.
We have no doubt whatsoever that the State Ministry of Education will be a force we can reckon with in reinforcing the introduction of Insurance as a course of study in Secondary Education by the Federal Ministry of Education by adopting the book we are presenting today.
Let me end by acknowledging the fact that the State Commissioner for Education is an Insurance Professional and a pride to our industry. As our ambassador in government, we urge that she continues to be a shining light.
We thank you immensely for this warm reception and attention.
BOLA TEMOWO, FCII, FIIN
President/Chairman of Council
CHARTERED INSURANCE INSTITUTE OF NIGERIA
