The Ogun State government has enjoined parents and guardians to allow their children and wards in the State public primary and secondary schools to key into the Insurance scheme put in place by the government in partnership with the State branch of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA).
The state's Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Barrister Segun Odubela gave this advice while presenting cheques recently to some orphans in primary schools in his office.
According to the commissioner, the government would not fold it arms and watch a situation whereby brilliant but indigent student's educational career is caught short as a result of accidents and untimely death of their parents or sponsors.
"We will not allow brilliant students to withdraw out of schools just because of their poor background or death and or disability of their sponsors," the Commissioner said
He, therefore, advised those who are yet to key into the insurance scheme to do so, saying that benefits derivable from the exercise outweighs the annual premium paid by subscribers.
Speaking earlier at the ceremony, Group Head, Business Development, International Energy Insurance, the underwriting company, Dele Oyetunji said more than 50,000 students have benefitted from the scheme from its commencement in 2012.
He said, "Each of the students in the state public secondary school paid an annual premium of N500 while their counterpart in the primary school paid N300".
Also speaking at the occasion, the State PTA Chairman, Moboluwaji Peculiar expressed appreciation to the State Government for supporting the scheme.
Recipients of the compensation include; Afolabi Badmus of Community Primary School, Eyin Osun in Ijebu North East Local Government Area, Taiwo Dolapo, Taiwo Timilehin and Taiwo Joel all of Community Primary School, Nike-Misa, Ogbere in Ijebu East Local Government Area .
